Driving a loudspeaker should be straightforward, just pass the current from the amp to the speaker. However just “passing” doesn’t come close to describing the challenges of faithfully passing current to the very nonlinear reactive load a loudspeaker represents. The peak currents demanded by a speaker on loud transients can be much higher than simple Ohms law suggests and with the reactive loads they are not coincident with the voltage peaks. We need to build a cable that will not impede either voltage or current and not alter their relationship across a wide octave band. At the lowest frequencies the problem is much simpler than at the highest frequencies. Even skin effect gets magnified by a factor of 10 across the band and the reactive components of the cable change from a minor effect at 20Hz to the dominant effect at 20 KHz. We have balanced the lowest low-frequency losses against maximized fidelity at high frequencies. The QUAD construction, the helical rotation to minimize interaction with external fields, the hollow core to equalize skin effect against DC conductivity and work together to provide the maximum in clarity and focus while still delivering the bass impact and sonorities that the best recordings can deliver.
